Correct Vandalism to Lakers Page
[edit]Once again, the number of championships listed for the Lakers has been changed. They have 18 championships, including 1 NBL championship. Please restore this factual information about the franchise's history. Mlmanous (talk) 09:08, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- The Lakers do indeed have 18 championships. 1 NBL, 1 BAA (later retconned as an NBA championship) and 16 NBA (17 with the retconned one). All should be listed in the infobox as these were major professional championships. There seems to be at least one user who for some reason is trying to remove it from the Lakers and Kings pages. Alvaldi (talk) 17:14, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Neither the National Basketball Association nor the Los Angeles Lakers themselves recognize the 1948 NBL title as a "championship." To do otherwise would be spreading misinformation, and, indeed, WP:Vandalism. MAINEiac4434 (talk) 18:22, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- False. It is a championship... the NBA not acknowledging it is irrelevant to the fact that the league existed and it had champions.. which are facts. It is certainly not vandalism. I'd also like to point out that the championship has been listed in this article since 2004 when it was created, so removing it would be the vandalism. Spanneraol (talk) 18:26, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- The Los Angeles Lakers themselves do not consider themselves to be the 1948 Champions. For Wikipedia to do so would be lying, and vandalism. MAINEiac4434 (talk) 19:17, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- The NBL championship is well established by secondary sources. Entities do not get to rewrite their own histories. Please do not remove sourced content without establishing consensus first. Alvaldi (talk) 19:33, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Why would an entity "rewrite" its own history to give itself less championships unless they knew it was a minor-league championship. MAINEiac4434 (talk) 19:53, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- The Lakers DO mention the NBL championship on their website in the team history section. Spanneraol (talk) 20:04, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Are you sure? Because I can't find it. MAINEiac4434 (talk) 20:18, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Here. Spanneraol (talk) 20:45, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- And I would note that even there, at the very top of the page, they do not highlight 1947-48 as the year they won a championship. Also worth noting (to me, at least) that they say they won the NBL "crown" and not a championship, as they do for every other season. MAINEiac4434 (talk) 20:49, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- It's not an NBA championship and this page does not say it is either.. it is an NBL one. Also, in the second sentence they refer to an NBL championship. Why are you so insistent on pre-NBA titles being excluded? Baseball teams include their titles from earlier non NL and AL leagues on their pages.. this is the same thing. The NBL was one of two major pro basketball leagues that merged to form the NBA... the titles from those leagues should all be included. Every team that one an NBL title has those titles listed on their wiki pages. Spanneraol (talk) 21:01, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Using the word "crown" instead of "championship" is a figure of speech. For instance, the Associated Press headlined the story of the inaugural NBA champions as "Minneapolis Lakers capture NBA crown". Alvaldi (talk) 19:11, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

- All reliable sources describe the NBL as a major professional league. It had a longer and far more established history than the BAA. The first decade after the merger, former NBL teams and players had much more success than their BAA counterparts. Alvaldi (talk) 23:11, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, the NBL was a superior league to the BAA (and every other league) in 1946-47 and 1947-48. In fact, the Warriors' first championship (in the BAA in 1947) was in a minor league. To give an example that few people, if any, have ever observed: as defending BAA champions, the Warriors lost to the Wilke-Barre Barons (of the American Basketball League) in a matchup with that team. Later, in the World Professional Basketball Tournament, the Lakers defeated Wilkes-Barre by 50 points. The NBL was THE major basketball league until the Lakers and Rochester Royals (the future Sacramento Kings) switched to the BAA (and proceeded to dominate the BAA/NBA) in 1948-49. Lakers only have 16 NBA Championships
[edit]minneapolis lakers 2601:189:4100:5C40:284C:48D2:4A3D:B124 (talk) 15:51, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- 17 NBA and 18 over all. Spanneraol (talk) 17:23, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Technically 1 NBL, 1 BAA and 16 NBA championships, totaling 18 major professional league championships. Alvaldi (talk) 18:58, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
Opening paragraph question
[edit]Is it really necessary to have this sentence in the opening paragraph: "The Lakers play their home games at Crypto.com Arena, an arena they share with the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association, and the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League."?
I don't understand the point of this. The opening paragraphs should serve to introduce the topic to a wider audience, including the most important information (such as the sentences that are before and after this sentence). Honestly, this reads like a hidden ad for Crypto.com. Anonyomjsdaidada (talk) 14:28, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that it is not necessary to mention other teams who play in the arena in the lead. Neither the Sparks or the Kings do so. Alvaldi (talk) 16:35, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
GA concerns
[edit]I am concerned that this article no longer meets the good article criteria. Some of my concerns are listed below:
- There is uncited text in the article, including entire paragraphs.
- The "Rivalries" section is under developed, with many short, uncited sections. Should this be expanded upon or removed?
- At over 11,000 words, WP:TOOBIG suggests that the text should probably be spun out. Is anyone interested in reviewing the article and seeing what can be trimmed, summarised more effectively, or removed?
- The "1979–1991: "Showtime"", "1996–2004: O'Neal and Bryant dynasty", "2011–2016: Post-Jackson era" and "2019–present: James and Davis era" sections are quite long. Can any of this information be summarised or removed from the article, or should additional headings be used?
Is anyone interested in addressing these concerns, or should this go to WP:GAR? Z1720 (talk) 16:06, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
