"g" pronunciation
[edit]Is the "g" in "Corgi" pronounced as the g in good or as the g in germ?
Perhaps a pronunciation guide could be added to the start of the article.
- Good suggestion. Done. Of course, now it makes me think that it ought to be done in *all* of the nonobvious breed pages... sigh... Elf | Talk 17:15, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Miscellaneous
[edit]Could someone please elaborate on the third bullet point that discusses corgi's as being considered "Damn it dogs"? The entire comment seems rather vague. I'm not certain what these "shows" are that it refers to, nor do I understand what it means for them to think "We are corgis damn it."
- Seems like nonsense to me, I just removed it. -Ravedave 04:46, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
I would just like to see some editing done to define which parts of the article refer to UK dogs/The Kennel Club and which refer to American (USA) dogs/The AKC. The article seems to go back and forth between the two rather vaguely. ALSO hate to think of merging the article with "Welsh Corgi". There is enough confusion with people thinking there is only one breed of Welsh Corgi without adding to it. MaryAW (talk) 06:17, 18 February 2015 (UTC)MaryAW
I know it silly. 212.129.77.93 (talk) 19:45, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
Famous/well known Pembroke Welsh Corgis?
[edit]This article mentions that the British Monarchy has Pembroke Welsh Corgis, but there are other well known Corgis (some even have their own Wikipedia page like Sutter Brown. Any thoughts on adding a section or links for well known Corgis?
I agree that's a good idea 212.129.77.93 (talk) 19:43, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
I think there could be more photos

Etymology in Lede
[edit]I have rewritten the sentence concerning the etymology of the word corgi.
Based on all etymological resources I have checked, the claim that cor means "cur", "working dog", or "to watch over" in Welsh is incorrect. See the entries for corgi in the University of Wales Dictionary (Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru), the Online Etymology Dictionary, the Oxford English Dictionary (if you have access), and on Wiktionary.
The cited source was a magazine article which I am unfortunately unable to verify. I also cannot find any reputable confirmation that the Corgi was ever commonly known as the 'Welsh Cur'. If anyone finds a good source for either of these claims, I would not be at all opposed to adding them back to the article in some capacity, but the supposed alternative etymology is clearly a minority if not fringe view, and as such does not belong in the lede. - Are you referring to "The Fairy Mythology of Corgis". University of Chichester: Gramarye (24): 19–24. Traumnovelle (talk) 20:39, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- Yes! Mea culpa; I should have specified. Do you have access to it? If so, what does it say about the etymology and do you think it warrants inclusion? Pangur Bán & I (talk) 21:03, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- I don't. It says it was accessed via EBSCOhost but I couldn't find it through the Wikipedia Library EBSCOhost. Traumnovelle (talk) 21:16, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- A shame. That was my experience as well. Do you have any thoughts concerning my edit here? Pangur Bán & I (talk) 21:53, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- I trust your judgement and defaulting to the available sources. The claim about the etymology is sourced in Welsh Corgi to: 'Beauchamp, Richard (1999). Welsh Corgis: Pembroke and Cardigan. Hauppauge, NY: Baron's. ISBN 978-0-76410-557-9.' but I'd rather go with academic sources over something like that. Traumnovelle (talk) 21:58, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I appreciate it. I did see Beauchamp 1999, but it only gives "cur dog" as one translation of corgi, which is actually sort of supported by the University of Wales Dictionary, (it gives it as an secondary generalized usage); it actually doesn't touch on the etymology, though. Pangur Bán & I (talk) 22:35, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- So the claim cited to it fails verification? Traumnovelle (talk) 22:56, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- Yes and no. The claim cited to it is contained in the book reads "The name 'Corgi' generally meant 'cur dog' or 'dwarf dog' in Welsh", which appears to be more or less true. It just doesn't make any claims about the etymology at all so far as I can tell. I just now edited the article to make it more clear that 'cur dog' is a usage, not the etymology.
